Short version: your rides stay on your phone. PathWanderer has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. To draw maps and trails, it asks two map services for the area you are looking at, which tells them roughly where you are, not where you have been.
What stays on your phone
Every ride and hike you record is saved in the app's own storage on your phone. This includes the route, distance, time and mode. Settings such as the map span, the background map and the saved offline areas are kept there too. PathWanderer does not upload any of it. Deleting the app deletes this data.
Location
PathWanderer uses your location to draw the paths around you, to show how far you are from the nearest one, and to record a ride.
- While Using is enough to see the map and to record a ride with the app open.
- Always lets a ride keep recording when the screen is locked or you are in another app. PathWanderer records location only while a ride is on. It never records location when you are not recording.
Your route stays on your phone and is never sent to us or to anyone else. The only location the app sends is the approximate area in the requests listed below.
Requests to other services
To draw maps and trails, the app makes these requests. Each one sends an approximate area, not your route.
- OpenStreetMap Overpass (overpass-api.de). When you are online, the app asks for the paths in the area around you, and for the roads, water and parks of any area you save for offline use. The request contains the area's coordinates and your IP address. OpenStreetMap's privacy policy applies: wiki.openstreetmap.org.
- Apple Maps. While you are online and Background map is on, the app asks Apple for a map image of the area around you. Apple's privacy policy applies: apple.com/legal/privacy.
- Apple place search and place names. When you search for an area to save, your search text and the part of the map you look at go to Apple. When an area is saved, its coordinates are sent to Apple to name it, such as "Canmore, Alberta".
Turning off Background map stops the Apple and Overpass map requests. Trails for areas you have saved are kept on your phone, so they do not need a request each time.
What the app does not do
- It does not have accounts, sign-in or passwords.
- It does not show ads, and it does not use advertising identifiers.
- It does not track you across other apps or websites.
- It does not use analytics or crash-reporting services that send data off your phone.
- It does not sell or share your data.
Your choices
- Turn off Background map in Settings to stop the map requests to Apple and Overpass.
- Delete saved offline areas in Settings to remove their trails and maps from your phone.
- Choose While Using in the Settings app, under PathWanderer, if you do not want background recording.
- Delete a ride from History, or delete the app to remove everything.
Children
PathWanderer does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children. It has no accounts, so there is nothing to collect from them.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts sending any data off your phone, this policy will change first, and the change will be dated at the top of the page.
